Lahore's historic Bagh-e-Jinnah is home to hundreds of species of trees, but a 90-year-old tree dating back to 1935 right in front of the Quaid-e-Azam Library stands out for its mysterious reputation and unique features. Commonly called the devil tree, this tree is not actually a symbol of fear, but a silent protector of human health and the environment. Talking to Express News, Tourist Officer of Bagh-e-Jinnah, Syed Najam Gilani, said that the scientific name of this tree is 'Alstonia', which is named after Sir Charles Alston, a Scottish botanist and curator of the botanical garden. It is also known by different names due to its other properties. It was also called blackboard tree due to its wood being used to make blackboard and milky tree due to the milky white substance coming out of its trunk. Why is it called the devil tree? Explaining the fears and superstitions associated with this tree, Syed Najam Gilani said that in ancient China and other regions, like the Pipal tree, Alstonia was also commonly believed to be inhabited by demons and ghosts, but the real reason for this assumption was the mesmerizing fragrance of its flowers. At night, when the flowers bloom on this tree, they give off a very strong and attractive smell like the 'Queen of the Night', which draws people towards it. In ancient times, people considered this attraction to be a trap of extraterrestrial forces or devils, hence the name 'devil tree'. According to experts, contrary to its name, this tree is extremely beneficial in terms of medicine. Before the invention of allopathic and homeopathic methods of treatment, ancient sages and botanists used the components of this tree to treat colds, flu and fever. It has excellent antimalarial properties; Its tea is still considered very useful for malaria fever, body pain and swelling.
