Significant progress has been made in the exploration of potential lithium resources in Pakistan. Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (O. Islamabad: Due to the increase in the global demand for lithium in the fields of energy, technology, infrastructure and electric mobility, new investment opportunities are expected to arise in Pakistan in the exploration of mineral resources, production of lithium-ion batteries and energy storage systems. Pakistan is organizing the 'Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum' on November 12 and 13 in Islamabad to enhance its role in the global mineral supply chain, which is expected to be attended by global investors and mining experts. Significant progress has been made in the exploration of potential lithium resources in Pakistan. Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has entered into an agreement with the Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (PINSTECH) to analyze over 2,000 groundwater samples from selected wells to determine the presence and quantity of lithium and rare earth elements. In a preliminary pilot study, the concentration of lithium in the water of Sindh's only Bakhsh-01 well has been reported as 291 mg/l. However, based on this preliminary result, the final quantity or economic viability of commercial mineable lithium reserves in Pakistan cannot yet be determined. On the other hand, growing imports of lithium-ion batteries in Pakistan highlight investment potential for the local industry. According to data compiled by Pakistan Solar Association, during January 2025 to May 2026, the country imported about 5. 39 gigawatt-hour capacity of lithium-ion batteries, worth about $256. 94 million.
